Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
