Colombian President Says 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Again' if American Forces Launches an Attack.

President Trump and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the rhetoric of their exchange, increasing tensions between the two countries after US forces targeted Venezuela to remove President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has drug factories and processing labs and his time is running out," Trump added.

Rising Tensions and Claims

Addressing journalists over the weekend, the US president threatened analogous armed intervention against Colombia, claiming Colombia is also "very ill" and governed by an unwell individual who likes making cocaine and distributing it to the United States."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest producer of cocaine, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.

A Deteriorating Partnership

The country has long been a staunch collaborator of Washington in the campaign against drug trafficking and enjoyed bipartisan support in the US capital, yet ties have worsened dramatically following Trump came to office.

Colombia’s drug trade is largely controlled by criminal organizations such as the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom demobilised following a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Strong Rebuttal

When asked if military intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good to me."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the 1990s, firmly denied these allegations. "I am no an illegitimate leader nor am I a narco," he affirmed.

"He comments without information. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And if they detain the president, whom a large part of the country loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," the president cautioned.

From Insurgent to Statesman

He passed part of his youth as a member in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed to have ever took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he participated in drafting the nation's constitution over three decades ago and later became a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before winning president.

"I pledged to never again hold arms again ... but for Colombia I will take up weapons once more," he said.

Reinforced Protection along with Broad Rejection

Colombia's defense chief announced that Petro's personal security had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with the US president, however, leaders from across Colombian politics have denounced the possibility of American military action against their nation.

Political and Financial Strains

Washington revoked his travel authorization following he called on US troops to refuse orders that violate law. In October, authorities imposed financial sanctions against the president, his wife and various associates.

At the same time while America bolstered its military presence near Venezuela and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed attacks against vessels off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
