The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the ability to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
